We currently have 4 adults going for the full week and one part week adult leader: John Young - full week Van Hyder - full week Berry Credle - full week Wayne Nicholas - full week John P. Young(grandpa) - part week We would like a few more. Camping with Boy Scouts is much different than Cub Scout camping trips. Don't Forget to Schedule Your Physical for Summer Camp!

Physical forms are due on Monday June 4. It is very important that we have these on time so the Troop can take advantage of expresss check in when we get to camp. If they are not all submitted several weeks early then the entire troop must go through the extended check in process.

You will need to have parts A, B and C of "BSA Annual Health and Medical Record" completed. A link to the most recent version of the form is available on the Troop 210 website under the tab "Forms".

You need to be aware of the last date a physical was done since your insurance may not pay for a physical done within 365 days of an earlier physical. Be prepared.

If you are planning on playing middle school or high school sports remember to bring a WCPSS physical form with you. Same goes for Pop Warner Football physicals.

Swim Test for Camp Raven Knob June 2 at Cary Swim Club

Before anyone can swim at camp they must pass the BSA swim test. So we don't have to waste time with this on the first day we will take our swim tests before we go to camp.

We have made arrangements to take the swim test, as a troop, on June 2, 2012, at 8:00 AM at the Cary Swim Club.

Below are guidelines we need to follow during the swim test to ensure it goes smoothly:

1. Come with swim suits on since bathrooms/changing facitilies may not be open
2. Do NOT eat a large breakfast
3. Be prompt by arriving at 8:00AM sharp
4. Please ask that all scouts stay in the area behind the starting blocks (no running around the pool)
5. Minimize the time at the pool. Conduct the swimming portion, float test, and depart.
6. Please identify any weaker swimmers so we can put them in the shallow lanes.

Camp Raven Knob - Program Options for Younger Scouts

Each day at Camp Raven Knob there are six merit badge periods, three in the morning, three in the afternoon.

Camp Raven Knob offers programs for younger scouts (first and second year) designed to teach them the basic scouting skills required for rank advancement (Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class).
...
Raven Scout Program
The Raven Scout Program is a three hour session that focuses on the requirements for Tenderfoot and Second Class. This is an excellent introductory program for Scouts new to the Troop and coming to camp for the first time. This program is offered only in the morning. First year campers from Troop 210 are required to take this program.

Senior Raven Program
The Senior Raven Program is a two hour session that focuses on the requirements for First Class. This program is good for Scouts who may be attending camp for the first time, but have been in the Troop for a while. This program is offered only in the afternoon. Scouts in Troop 210 who have already completed Raven Scout, but have not yet reached First Class are strongly encouraged to take Senior Raven Scout.

Scouts may not take both Raven Scout and Senior Raven Scout in the same week.

If you choose to take one of these programs this summer you will also need to choose the merit badge classes you would like to take for the rest of the day.

Help will be available at Monday's meeting.

Update on Projects / Upgrades at CRK

Below is an update, from CRK staff, regarding projects and upgrades at the camp that have gone on since last summer:

Although you can't tell from looking at the weather outside, but the end of the year is almost upon us and we've been busy planning for your troop's next summer camp adventure at Raven Knob.  We look forward to having you and your Scouts join us in 2012 for a full-tilt Scouting experience!

The mild weather has allowed our ranger staff and camp volunteers to make tremendous progress on several projects now underway throughout the camp property.  I wanted to take a moment to update you on these exciting developments and what you can expect for 2012!

Health Lodge Update: We are preparing to raze the current Health Lodge at camp, and replace it with a new facility.  With multiple treatment rooms and a dispensary window for routine medications this new Health Lodge will be light years beyond our current facility.   The new facility should be up and running by June 1st.

Action Archery Arrives:  With the generous support of Troop 934, we will introduce Action Archery at camp in 2012.  Scouts will walk along a trail where they will engage multiple life size foam wildlife targets.  This new activity, which is laid out adjacent to the current Archery Range, is designed to enhance the overall shooting skills of our Scouts.

Rifle Range Phase 1:  We are taking steps to build the new Rifle Range at CRK, to be located beside the current Shotgun Range. We have long needed an improved Rifle Range at camp, and while it will not be complete this summer, it is expected to be online for 2013.  The new range will feature 24 shooting positions for Rifle Shooting (compared to our current 8), plus an additional 8 positions dedicated to Handgun shooting.  At this point, we are preparing the land for timbering and grading.  We will start construction on the range in late 2012.

New Latrines: Campsites on the "hill area" have now been closed to weekend camping while we work to install new latrine facilities in Deer Valley, Knoll, Hilltop and Trails End campsites.

Atwell Cottage Improvements:  The Atwell Cottage is located just inside the camp gate and serves as home base for our weekend Campmasters and our Summer Camp Director.  This year, the Atwell Cottage has received a new roof and new flooring.  Next up will be new exterior siding.

Josh Davis Shelter:  Josh Davis was an outstanding young man who was ingrained into the very fiber of Scouting at Raven Knob.  Although we lost Josh in the spring of 2008, his involvement in Native American Dancing, the Order of the Arrow, Camp Staff, and his local community left an indelible mark on the lives of so many.  With the support of his friends and loved ones we will build a new instructional shelter at camp in his honor.  The shelter will be located adjacent to the Wahissa Lodge Building and will serve Scouting programs year round.

Well those are the hot topics at camp right now.   Your continued support of Scouting at Raven Knob has helped to make these projects possible.  We will forward other updates by email as we move forward, and on-going updates will be posted at ravenknob.com, so stay tuned!

Introduction - Camp Raven Knob July 1 – July 7, 2012

Join us this year for another fun filled week of summer camp at Camp Raven Knob (CRK).

Troop 210 will be going to Camp Raven Knob July 1 – July 7, 2012.

This is sure to be a great time and is an excellent opportunity for all scouts to work on rank advancement.

Activities at CRK include: Aquatics, Handicrafts, Nature, Raven Scouts, Scoutcraft, Shooting Sports, Trail to Eagle, Outback (Mountain Man), and High Adventure (Rampage) programs.

We anticipate camp fees for this year will be approximately $300 per camper.  The fees cover registration, meals, and transportation for the week.  (Additional fees may be required for specific merit badges) You will NOT find a better deal (non-Boy Scout) for summer camp anywhere else!!!

We are also looking for Old Goats to go with the Troop to camp this year. If you are interested please email John Young at john_young@cree.com
